Mother's Day is right around the corner, and whether or not you have someone for whom to buy this year, it's nice to have ideas about what to get for the women in your life, especially since there are always occasions to celebrate them (even if it's just to say I love you or you're a boss, girl). We each came up with a short list of some of our favorite gift ideas at the moment to spark some inspiration for you.
My mom gave me this tote bag for Christmas, and it’s one of my favorite gifts ever. The bottom unzips to hold things you may want to keep separate, like shoes or diapering supplies. I like the idea of tote bags in general for gifts, whether it’s a monogrammed leather version she’ll have forever or a more inexpensive, seasonal choice. The best part about this gift is that you can stuff it with bonus gifts. Put together a beach-themed bag with sunscreen and magazines, or just stuff it with her favorite snacks.
Board games make great gifts because they fall under the category of “things I would like to have but probably wouldn’t buy for myself.” I’ve sung the praises of this game before, but it’s worth another mention because it is so FUN. My husband even loves this game, and watching him try to win over Mr. Darcy with his wit and beauty cards is unspeakably entertaining.
Hear me out on this one, because I know it sounds silly. But when I saw this bank, I instantly wanted it. Not only would it be beautiful in an entryway or on a shelf, but it’s functional! We have a bowl in our laundry room for just this purpose, and it’s so nice to have a place to deposit the extra coins which inevitably go rattling around in the dryer. Again, this is something that no one really buys for herself, but it will make your giftee smile whenever she sees it. Make it even more special by stuffing it with a letter telling your mom, sister, or friend how much she means to you.
Studio Senn is one of my favorite Etsy shops, and this item is more than just a beautiful calendar. It helps you to keep track of all of your important dates (birthdays, anniversaries, feast days). This is great for those “if I only had a brain moments” which are ubiquitous among mothers. I use mine to fill out our whiteboard calendar every month, and it makes remembering easy. I’ll take as much of that as I can get.
Many women I know drink tea, or they drink pour over coffee, which requires a tea kettle. Why not have a tea kettle that’s timeless and beautiful? I have one that we registered for when we got married, but it’s pretty simple and starting to discolor. I’ve always wanted a copper tea kettle, and I discovered this one while researching them online. It looks like it’s straight out of Lord of the Rings. If copper isn’t her style, there are so many other types of lovely tea kettles out there (like these and these!) that are functional and pretty.
Luxury Stationery Set
This type of gift has potential to seem really generic and boring, so if you’re going to gift something like this make sure you get a style that is thoughtful and reminds you of the person for whom you’re buying. The great thing about a stationery set is that it’s super convenient for when you need a card to say something and don’t have time/money to buy a personalized Hallmark card at the grocery. I’ve used simple stationery for bridal and baby shower cards, thank you notes, letters I’ve left for Jonathan on occasion, and even wedding cards. I recently bought this set, but I researched and found some other beautiful sets like this vintage one and this classic New Orleans themed stationery that can serve many purposes.
Plant Grow Kit
If the woman you’re shopping for is interested in plants but isn’t quite a professional green thumb, these waxed planters are great ways to get them started on having the garden (indoor or outdoor) that they’ve always wanted. I got one of these last year, and it bloomed really well until Miriam dug her hand in it and uprooted all of the sprouts (I don’t blame her; I planted spring flowers right as fall was approaching, so they wouldn’t have lasted anyway). This site has great variety, beautiful presentation, and easy instructions for each plant. It’s a fool-proof way to add a touch of greenery to your home.
One of the best things about living in 2018 is that if you love something, there’s probably a company that will send a version of it to you every month. From wine to maternity pants to book of the month subscriptions, there are countless ways to have easy access to the things you love. One of the things I love most (and that I can enjoy during pregnancy) is coffee. There are so many coffee subscription companies, but the one that impressed me most was Driftaway Coffee. They allow you to send one shipment at a time OR subscribe someone for 6 months, which saves a few dollars in the end if you stay with your subscription for the half year. There’s an app where you can rate the coffee, describe flavor profiles, and choose which coffees you want to try next. And, Driftaway donates a bit of their profits towards benefiting the lives of coffee farmers.
